Plant Care Guide: Frequently Asked Questions 🌿
What Is Companion Planting and Why Does It Work?
Your Potted Companion is designed using companion planting principles, where plants naturally support each other to create a healthier, more productive container garden.
Benefits of companion planting include:
- Herbs help deter pests with their strong scents.
- Flowers attract bees and other beneficial pollinators.
- Different root systems make the most of the available space.
- Increased biodiversity can help create a healthier growing environment.
That's the magic of companion planting. 💚
Where Should I Position My Companion Pot?
Group your pots together. Plants love good company! Keeping pots close together creates a protective microclimate that helps conserve moisture, reduce evaporation and shield plants from drying winds. It's a simple way to help your container garden thrive.
☀️ Full Sun (6+ Hours of Direct Sunlight) best for:
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Strawberries

🌤 Part Sun (3–5 Hours of Sunlight) best for:
- Violas
- Parsley
- Mixed companion pots

🌿 Bright Shade (Protected from harsh afternoon sun) best for:
- Delicate flowers
- Leafy greens

Tip: Morning sun is gentler than afternoon sun. If your plants don't look happy, try moving the pot to a location with more or less sunlight and monitor their response.
How Often Should I Water My Companion Pot?
Regular watering is essential for healthy container gardens.
💧Check Soil Moisture Every 2–3 Days
- Insert your finger 2–5cm into the soil.
- If the soil feels dry, water deeply.
- If the soil feels damp, wait another day or two before watering.
Self-Watering Pots
If your pot has a self-watering reservoir, keep the reservoir topped up and the soil evenly moist for the best leafy growth.
☀️Summer Watering Tips
Melbourne summers can be hot, and pots dry out quickly. During heatwaves, your plants may require daily watering or some protection from extreme afternoon sun. Keep your pots together where possible—it's a simple way to reduce moisture loss and help your plants stay hydrated.
Tip: If your plant is wilting, water it immediately, regardless of the time of day.
How Do I Feed My Companion Pot?
Because pots contain a limited amount of soil, nutrients need to be replenished regularly. We recommend:
- Liquid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks.
- Slow-release fertiliser pellets every 2–3 months.
- Adding compost to the pot will feed the soil.
Tip: A 9L watering can is perfect for mixing and applying liquid fertiliser throughout your garden.
How Do I Harvest Herbs to Encourage More Growth?
Regular harvesting encourages herbs to become fuller and more productive.
For herbs such as basil and mint:
- Harvest stems just above a leaf node (where a new set of leaves emerges).
- This encourages branching and creates a bushier plant.
The more you harvest correctly, the more your herbs will produce.
Do My Plants Need Support as They Grow?
Some plants may require support as they mature, particularly:
- Tomatoes
- Sweet peas
- Other climbing or tall-growing plants
A simple stake can help keep plants upright and healthy.
Tip: Cut up old stockings to create soft plant ties. The stretchy fabric secures stems without damaging them and can be reused season after season. (A gardening tip passed down from my Grandma!) or twine also works.
Why Are My Plants Not Thriving?
Common causes include:
- Too much or too little sunlight.
- Under-watering or overwatering.
- Lack of nutrients.
- Seasonal weather changes.
Every garden is different, so don't be afraid to adjust your plant's position or care routine based on how it's performing.
