Golden & Ruby Greens
Bright blooms, bold harvests 🌼❤️
Enjoy nutrient-rich spinach and striking ruby-stemmed rainbow chard, beautifully complemented by cheerful yellow violas. Thoughtfully planted using companion planting principles, these varieties work together to attract beneficial insects, support healthy growth and provide a colourful, productive harvest for your kitchen.
What’s included in the Potted Companion:
Rainbow Chard (Beta vulgaris) ornamental and extremely nutritious, this colourful heirloom rainbow chard features red midribs for ongoing harvest and high yields.
Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) a leafy vegetable packed with vitamins and minerals. For best flavour pick the outside leaves first and use the same day.
Viola (Viola cornuta) produces masses of bold, yellow-coloured edible blooms.
Planted in a large light blue self-watering pot (28cmx26cm).
Why it works:
Red-stemmed rainbow chard, spinach and violas thrive in the same cool growing conditions, making them ideal companions. Their different growth habits maximise space, while violas attract beneficial pollinators and provide edible flowers, creating a productive pot that's both beautiful and practical.
Grow tips & Position:
Place in full sun to part shade. In warmer weather, afternoon shade will help keep the leafy greens thriving.
As a self-watering pot, keep the reservoir topped up regularly and check the water level often, especially during hot or dry weather.
Feed every 2–4 weeks with a liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy leafy growth and continuous flowering.
Pick the outer leaves of the rainbow chard and spinach regularly to encourage continuous growth. Harvest viola flowers as needed, or leave them to brighten the pot.
Best grown through autumn, winter and spring.
Benefits & Uses:
Rainbow Chard is rich in vitamins A, C and K, plus magnesium and iron to support immunity and healthy bones. Delicious in salads, stir-fries, soups, pasta dishes or lightly sautéed.
Spinach is packed with iron, folate, vitamins A, C and K, making it a nutrient-rich leafy green that supports overall health. Perfect for salads, smoothies, pasta, curries, omelettes and cooked side dishes.
Viola while not a significant source of nutrients, edible viola flowers contain antioxidants and add colour to meals. Decorate salads, desserts, cakes and cocktails with their delicate edible blooms.
